One of the things I often tell my students is how much I enjoy teaching 7th graders! Sincerely, I love spending my days with such fresh enthusiasm for life, and an unending amount of energy (which I try my best to absorb for my own!) I started teaching at Slauson in the Fall of 1999 (insert Prince song here.) Since then, I have had the pleasure of sharing my love of science, math, and health with thousands of young minds. Slauson Middle School is a special place because of the diverse community in which it is situated. The colleagues I am fortunate to call friends, are some of the most dedicated humans I will ever know! Our students are in a great place to learn. It is with this mindset that I approach my job of bringing 7th grade life science alive for my students.
In addition to my love for the quirkiness of middle schoolers, I am also a mom of three girls, 16, 11 & 11.... yes, twins! My oldest is now driving and my twins are starting 6th grade this year! It will be interesting to see how much more gray hair I have at the end of the year. Truly, I enjoy time with my family tremendously! Our family spends lots of time exploring the shores of Lake Michigan in the summer, kayaking, running, swimming & biking. In the winter, we downhill ski, sled & skate and embrace those few, early-morning snow day surprises. Yoga is a year-round practice of mine; looking for that total zen to kick in any minute. I also have a two-year-old Goldendoodle named, Cash. He does a great job of bringing a sense of calm to our house when yoga doesn't do the trick. These interests balance my time in the classroom and give me plenty of ways in which to connect with my students. (Thankfully, Mr. Workman is quite the team player and is the real reason any balance is ever achieved!) I look forward to this being a year full of great adventures for us all!
Lastly, my content interests are focused on the growth and improvement I see in my students over time, with respect to our science standards. I have undergraduate degrees in both Health and Biology (CMU) with a Master of Arts in Teaching (Marygrove) and additional graduate work in the areas of Science Education and Curriculum Design (U of M). Most importantly, I hope to share my curiosity, love of learning, and positive outlook with the students I teach!
